Student Stress and Academic Performance: Seven Ways in Which Too Much Stress Can Affect Your Grades

June 30, 2008

You’ve probably been hearing the same mantra since elementary school - if you don’t get good grades, you won’t get into a good college, you won’t get a good job and you’ll end up living like a bum on the street…

All joking aside, your academic performance really does affect what fields you can go into and what type of job you can hold in the future. After all, you wouldn’t expect a straight-D student to get into medical school - nor would you want them to. However, whether you’re in high school, college, or graduate school, constantly dealing with stress can have a big impact on your overall academic success in any of the following ways:

1. Stress Affects Your Health

Stress suppresses your immune system, which causes increased susceptibility to bugs and viruses, as well as chronic health problems like headaches and upset stomach. It doesn’t take a Harvard graduate to tell you that if you’re sick, you won’t be able to give 100% to your classes. You may not feel up to studying or you could suffer further from missing classes. If stress is causing physical symptoms, it’s time to consult a professional therapist or stress management consultant.

2. Stress Affects Memory Retention

Students who experience large amounts of stress in their lives often have trouble with memory retention. When you’re stressed, you’re more likely to forget the facts and figures presented in class, and you’ll be less likely to successfully recall this information on tests, labs and on real life applications. Obviously, this is a problem for anyone who wants to do well in college, so try to identify and remedy the causes of stress in your life if you find you’re forgetting more than you retain from your classes.

3. Stress Causes Anxiety

Students who face a tremendous amount of stress may also suffer from anxiety - ranging from mild cases of worry to severe, can’t-leave-the-house cases of nerves. If you’re suffering from anxiety at any level, you’ll find that you can’t focus as well on your school work or on other aspects of student life like extra-curricular activities and personal relationships.

4. Stress Affects Your Judgment

Stress has a definite impact on student judgment. Some students will turn to illegal drugs, prescription medications or binge-drinking in order to escape from the affects of stress. However, turning to drugs and alcohol doesn’t erase the source of your stress - it only adds more. Substance abuse is a serious problem, so if you find yourself pouring a glass or four of wine each night to help you wind down, it’s time to seek professional guidance.

5. Stress Compromises Your Future Outlook

Stress can turn an ambitions, driven student into one who’s nervous and unsure about the future. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you have a test Monday, a paper due on Wednesday and a major lab on Friday - but don’t let the little things affect your drive for success. If you find yourself thinking that there’s no way you’ll get everything done, try breaking large tasks down into smaller pieces and tackle them one bit at a time.

6. Stress Affects Your Self-Esteem

Students who feel overwhelmed by stress may experience feelings of guilt and hopelessness, causing their self-esteem to falter. If you’ve dropped the ball on your academic work, it’s easy to feel like you’ll never get back on track - but don’t think like this! If you get too caught up in your recent stumbles, you’ll lose track of all the positive strides you’ve made in your studies. Remind yourself of all the good things you’ve accomplished so far and find small, concrete ways to get back on the right path.

7. Stress Can Lead to Mental Health Problems

It’s easy to let the competing academic and personal priorities of being a student get the better of you as a student, and it can become difficult to see outside all this stress. As a result, many students - particularly college-aged students - end up dealing with depression or thinking suicidal thoughts. If you’re ever feeling that there’s no way out of the stress you’re under, seek proper care immediately - there are people who understand what you’re going through that can help you work through the stress you’re dealing with.

Stressed For College Success? Seven Key Sources of Stress For Students

June 30, 2008

It’s tough being a student. You’re busy learning to live on your own, balancing the demands of friends and relationships and on top of that – you’re expected to study! Learning how to balance these various demands is vital to your academic performance, so take the time to learn how to manage stress effectively. The following are some of the key sources of stress that students have identified in recent studies of students attending colleges and universities around the nation:

1. Time Management

Time management was frequently rated as the biggest stress factor for students involved in post secondary education. Many students just aren’t equipped with the skills it takes to manage their various responsibilities. If you’re someone who spends too little time studying – or someone who’s often distracted by extracurricular activities – look for programs on campus designed to teach you better time management skills.

2. Setting Priorities

Balancing all the various obligations that college life entails and setting good priorities is another source of stress identified by many of students involved in the studies. With all the clubs, activities and athletic events going on, it can be hard for many students to balance the things they want to do with the things they need to do – like studying and working part-time. Many students in the studies commented that they felt like they were always “on the run” between different activities.

3. Financial Stability

Worrying about money and financial stability was identified as another key source of stress for students. And it makes sense – college tuition bills are constantly increasing and extra expenses like books and materials add up quickly. Students with homes and families to support are most likely to feel the pinch, but even students with no financial obligations can find it difficult to balance all the monetary obligations without stress.

4. Family Expectations

Family – you can’t live with them and you can’t live without them. Many students are surprised to find that the stress from family expectations follows them, even after they leave the nest to attend college. Some students are only attending school to please individuals in their family, while others may be attending school to prepare for a career that their families aren’t pleased with. Either of these situations – as well as many others – can be stressful for students who are already dealing with heavy coursework, and financial and social responsibilities.

5. Personal relationships

Finding yourself wrapped up in a college romance can be exciting, but intimate relationships can take a toll on already stressed out college students. Many students interviewed in these studies expressed concerns over how difficult it is to maintain their academic performance while in a serious relationship. On the other hand, many students claimed that having a significant other that appreciated the hard work and dedication involved in going to school was a net positive – your success really depends on how committed you are to balancing these different responsibilities.

6. Campus Crime

Being away from home for the first time can be scary – so it’s perfectly reasonable that campus crime would be another source of stress for students. Crime statistics can be especially daunting if your campus has recently experienced a series of attacks or burglaries. If you live in an unsafe neighborhood or attend a college with a poor safety record, take appropriate precautions like not walking alone at night and locking up your room when you leave. You may also want to consider renters insurance if break-ins are a problem in your area.

7. Future Uncertainty

Anyone who’s attended college has heard the dreaded question at least one hundred times – “So what are you going to do when you graduate?” The scary thing is, no one really knows what they’re going to do, unless they’re one of the lucky few with job offers lined up and waiting for them. If you’re feeling anxiety over your future plans, take a deep breath and try to let go of some of your stress. Uncertainty is a part of life, so worry less and try to enjoy the ride.

A Day in the Life of a Celebrity Personal Assistant

June 30, 2008

I’m a celebrity personal assistant. People often ask me, “What’s a typical day look like in the life of a personal assistant?” The answer is emphatically, without question, a definite, positive: there is no typical day! Each and every day is unique to itself. For example, one day you can be setting up a photo shoot for your celebrity, arranging for stylist, hair and makeup people, and the photographer all to converge at a certain time and place. The next day you can be calling the Oprah Winfrey show to explain that the private jet carrying your star will not be landing in Chicago due to a tornado warning but your celebrity will be at the taping of the show on time no matter what. Or you may just spend a day waiting for the telephone company to repair a television at the star’s summer home. I remember the time line I was once given from AT&T was: we’ll be there sometime between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. Are they serious?

But being a celebrity personal assistant obviously has its perks too. I’ve ridden in more limousines and planes than I can count. I’ve hobnobbed with other famous people at lunches, dinners and events because they were hobnobbing with my famous person. I’ve been to the Academy Awards (that’s where the little golden statue called The Oscar is bestowed on a chosen few). I’ll never forget my husband at the time calling a friend to find out where to rent a tuxedo. “We’re going to the Academy Awards,” he said. His friend replied, “What do you need a tux for if you’ll just be sitting on the bleachers outside?” “We’re going inside,” he gloated.

And the hand-me-downs are often quite wonderful too. Many assistants I know have been given designer clothes, shoes, handbags, nice gifts they’ve received and didn’t want to keep like candles and holders, paperweights, picture frames, silk wall hangings, etc. I often take beautiful bouquets of flowers home to enjoy because my boss will out of town and not there to appreciate them.

But being a celebrity personal assistant isn’t all roses and Chanel sunglasses. The job has its hazards and roadblocks to maneuver around too. Insert name of derailed celebrity here, such as, oh I don’t know, let’s say Britney Spears?

The key to finding success in this job is to understand the job title. Celebrity. Okay this is pretty straight forward. Anyone who is recognized in their field as a household name is a celebrity. Assistant. Most agree that this describes a helper, supporter and often a secretary. Personal. Ah. This is where the job title gets tricky. Personal means working in the celebrity’s home. Interacting with everyone in their world on a day to day, personal level. Being the confidante to the celebrity. Being one of the few people in the world to see the good, the bad, and the ugly side of a person. Being in a relationship with the celebrity, almost like a marriage, for better or worse.

Being a celebrity personal assistant is both exhilarating and sometimes exhausting. Most don’t receive phone calls in the middle of the night or on weekends from their boss. Most people don’t go home every night having just dealt with their employer’s goofy friends, stressed out relatives, hyper children, and neurotic pets, all the while handling the celebrity’s needs and desires for the day, and maybe getting some real work done in the process.

Most people aren’t as crazy as I am. Take it or leave it, I’m a celebrity personal assistant, and I love it.

Practice Piano Effectively to Be a Good Pianist

June 30, 2008

Although this article is written for pianists who want to learn how to practice effectively, it is also a good advisory for any musicians wanting to hone their skills in any musical instruments.

The great Vladimir Horowitz, an acclaimed Russian-American concert pianist once said, “If I do not practice for a day, I know it. If I do not practice for two days, my wife knows it. If I do not practice for three days, my audience knows it.” This is indeed a very wise statement regarding practicing on any musical instruments including the piano.

The hours we all put into practicing on the piano are very important if you want to become an accomplished pianist. We all practice to maintain or improve our playing styles. However, do you know that very often, much of the time aspiring pianist spent practicing on the piano is not at its most effective? Why is that so?

The above questions bring up the old debate of quality versus quantity of practice sessions. If the pianist’s focus is correct, much more can be accomplished in just 30 minutes rather than two hours practicing on the piano.

Many pianists do not really practice but simply “play” the piano. What does this mean? This means that they sit down and simply play what they already know. This can be good for the maintenance or perfecting of certain complicated techniques or scales but, with the exceptions mentioned, these pianists are not progressing at all.

The essence of every piano practice session is to strive for perfection and improvement. Perfection, improvement and musicality should be the goals for a productive practice session. Every technique should be executed as perfectly as possible. This will include hand/finger positions, wrist movements, touch, expressions, and interpretations among others. Practicing the wrong techniques will develop the wrong skills. To strive for perfection is the first step in practicing on the piano.

Every piano practice session should create a challenge for the pianist to accomplish something never done before. I repeat - something NEVER previously done by the pianist before, unless he/she wants to perfect some earlier learnt skills. Each practice session could include a new rudiment, new song, or a new exercise. It could also be a new tempo for an old exercise and the tempo does not necessarily have to be faster, just something different will do. The main point is that a new accomplishment should be attempted at every practice session. That is where new techniques are learnt and there are improvements instead of just being status quo.

The purpose of playing any musical instrument is to play music and thus, music should be kept foremost in mind whenever you are practicing on the piano. Even when playing a rudiment or technical exercise it should be thought of musically and how it can be applied to the music being played.

How Long Should Each Piano Practice Session Be?

The amount of practice time will differ with each individual pianist and also whether you are a beginner or an accomplished pianist. A beginner may need to practice for half an hour to an hour a day and gradually increase the time to 2 hours per day as he/she progresses along.

A serious professional pianist should practice for about 4 hours or more a day because of his increased repertoire and skills of music. As playing engagements and other responsibilities increase with a developing career, then practice time can be decreased and you practice in accordance to your needs your professional and personal schedule allows. Whichever the case, practice sessions should be a continuing process throughout the pianist’s entire professional career.

Religious Perspectives of Death

June 30, 2008

Death, both to the living and to the dying, means many different things. To some extent the meaning is different from person to person but many times our thoughts are based on our religion. Each religion around the world has their own view on death, the process of dying, and what is done after death. These perspectives help those who believe make death more acceptable. Many credit their faith with helping them deal with a mortality issue and others look to their faith in order to help them understand the passing of those they love. Grief is a powerful emotion and how we deal with it may have much to do with our faith.

The Christian Perspective

The Christian grief process is generally guided by scripture from the bible because there are statements such as, “There is a time to be born, and a time to die.” This gives believers the knowledge that we all have our time. For Christians, death is a part of life and many Christians believe that it is their duty to take care of the dying as they wait for Jesus to return. Christians have a wide variety of beliefs after death, but most believe that death is just another part of the journey as we all experience eternal life so long as one believes in Jesus Christ.

The Islamic Perspective

In the Islamic faith grief is something that involves the person dying as well as those around him or her. When someone is dying in this faith it is the job of the friends and family to gather around the ill person and help them remember their commitment to God. Muslims believe that death is the will of Allah. After death the body is washed and wrapped in a shroud. There are specific prayers that are to be said and the body is to be laid on the right side facing the direction of Makkah. In the Islamic faith the family members are to pay off any debts of the deceased soon after death as they anticipate the person being judged after death and want the process to be as favorable as possible. Bereavement in this faith is often accompanied by constant prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage.

The Hindu Perspective

Many people have commented over the ages that grief management seems a lot easier for the people of this faith. While this may or may not be true, it could be owed to the fact that those that practice this religion believe in the rebirth as well as the reincarnation of souls. Practitioners believe that death is simply part of the experience, and that after a time the soul will adjust and return to physical form again. There are two paths for the soul to take after death; the path of the sun and the path of the moon. Those that take the path of the sun will never return again but those that take the path of the moon will return. Many different rituals have been practiced for thousands of years and may help with the grief process.

The Buddhist Perspective

The Buddhist perspective of death is quite interesting and is said to make grief not so troublesome for those that have suffered a loss. The practitioners of this faith do not look at death as a sad event, rather the breaking apart from the material world and material that we are composed of. A Buddhist believes that the soul awakens at death. Before the death friends and family like to be with the person to help them achieve the right state of mind as they go into death. One needs to think of death as their rebirth into another, and perhaps greater, realm than the human world can offer.

The Jewish Perspective

Not unlike Christians, those that are Jewish tend to view death as a natural experience. Many Jewish people believe that death gives life more meaning and that because we know we all must die sometime, we should spend each day living the more pure and ethical life possible. Unlike a lot of faiths, Judaism is a bit different in that they don’t believe that all believers will simply go to Heaven or Hell based on their belief or lack thereof. Instead, each individual will be judged on their ethical behavior during life. For this reason, Jewish people view death as natural but their final judgment by God.

Religious Perspective and Grief Management

As you can see, each religion has their own take on death and this perspective is often what gives people the ability to get through the loss of their loved ones and still have a zest for life. While religion may help to comfort those that are left behind after death, it does not mean that the loss of a loved one will be easy. Grief, no matter what faith you believe in, is a very real and necessary part of the death experience for those who are still living. Strive to comfort yourself with faith based knowledge, but also allow yourself to get depression and grief counseling if you feel you need it, or simply surround yourself with supportive people. You can learn more about the grief process and how others deal with death by visiting GriefManagement.

Mike Vines, in association with GriefManagement.org and GriefManagement.org Forums, seeks to provide a safe and congenial home to those suffering from grief, along with the hope and understanding from a community of concerned individuals willing to share their own experiences to help others through the difficulties of life.

College Planning: Education IRA or 529 Plan?

June 30, 2008

With the costs of college rising at a rate that is twice the rate of inflation, college planning has become more critical than any time in the past. Whether you plan to have your kids go to a community college, and then transfer to a four-year college or go directly to a four-year college it’s going to be costly. Thankfully, there have been resent plans set up, so that you can save for the rising costs associated with college. Both the Education IRA (Coverdell ESA) and the 529 plans offer good ways to save for college.

The Education IRA, or Coverdell ESA, is one of the simplest ways to save and find a child’s education. The Education IRA acts similarly to a basic IRA, in that you are limited in the amount of contribution you can make within a given year. Also, there are income restrictions, so if you make over a certain amount of money each year (currently $110,000) you are not eligible for Education IRA contributions. The Coverdell Education IRA is a great tool when saving for college over time. Obviously, contributing $2000 a year for four years isn’t going to fund your child’s complete education. This is why starting in Education IRA as early as possible makes all the difference in the world. We know that from financial planning basics that time is the most important factor in achieving our financial goals, investment return is secondary. When it comes to selecting investments within an Education IRA, you can choose just about any investment style or asset allocation, these IRA’s offer little investment restriction.

Much like the Education IRA, the 529 plan is designed to help with the rising tuition costs associated with a college education. When you set up a 529 plan, its ownership is set up in your name, and not that of the beneficiary. This can be particularly attractive, and that the beneficiary can be changed in the future. You may have a child that does not end up attending college, for what ever reason. This puts the control in your hands, where it belongs. When it comes to setting up a 529 plan, you will have to check with your specific state, as these are state driven plans. You are, however, required to set up a 529 plan with your specific state. You can search the different states to find the most attractive 529 plan. It is important to note, however, that some states offer tax incentives for contributions. Unfortunately, not all states offer this at this time. Regardless of state, withdrawals for qualified education are completely free from tax. This isn’t just limited to fancy qualified colleges, many trade schools qualify as well.

The 529 plan offers a few more bells and whistles that the Education IRA does not. Most notably, the amount of money you can contribute to a 529 plan is quite a bit greater than that of Coverdell individual retirement accounts. This can be rather important if you start saving for college late. Current limits are set at

Adversely, you’ll have less investment selection within a 529 plan, though, most 529 plans offer an adequate selection of mutual funds to choose from.

Choosing between the Education IRA and the 529 plan may seem complicated. If you’re starting early and don’t.can’t afford to put large amounts away, the Education IRA may be the logical choice, as the 529 plan typically comes with a higher cost to operate. If you’re getting a late start and would like to contribute larger amounts the 529 plan may be a good fit. The important thing to remember here, is to do something, indecision will just cost you the most valuable key to saving– time. When selecting a 529 plan. It is always advisable to go over it with your financial advisor, he/she should be up to date on state specific information and 529 plan choices.

If you’d like more information on the 529 Plan you can visit the site for specific details. For more on saving via the Education IRA you can get more details on that as well.

The Tragedy Of Suicide

June 30, 2008

Having someone that you love commit suicide is one of the most painful human experiences imaginable. It is a sort of grief that is hard to imagine unless you are aware of the victim’s circumstances or know them personally. Even if you have experienced the loss of many other loved ones, even through tragic circumstances, dealing with the grief of someone who is gone because they took their own life is so much different. Regardless of your age or your gender, or that of the person who has passed away, dealing with suicide is never easy. It is a grief that seems more personal than any other kind, and leaves us wondering, sometimes for the rest of our lives, the true cause of their final act of desperation.

A Different Kind of Grief

Dealing with the loss of a loved one whose death was a result of suicide is very challenging. In addition to the immense feelings of loss and sadness you may also be experiencing shock, blame, anger, and trouble understanding what went wrong. A suicide is usually an unexpected death, so it is hard dealing with all of these feelings at the same time. Many people have described the grief process of someone who died of suicide as a terrible roller coaster that just won’t end.

There are many feelings that come with the death of someone that you love in this manner. Some of the feelings that are experienced are guilt, blame, anger, shame, confusion, relief, despair, betrayal, and of course abandonment. This mix of emotions is understandably overwhelming and as a result the grieving individual may feel that they are very disconnected from the person who has passed away as well as those that are still living.

Many people who are grieving after a suicide become obsessed with the need to understand the person’s reasons for their action. This can be an overwhelming need, and one that can never be fulfilled. Because of this, there may be a huge sense of responsibility for the death. Other people get angry and feel as though the deceased went about the suicide as a hateful act; to get back at them for something.

The Stigma Attached with Suicide

The stigma attached with suicide truly does affect the mourning process, more so than a lot of people realize. There are many cultural taboos and religious beliefs attached to suicide that can lead one to be unfairly judged by friends when they really need them the most. Many people avoid the subject of suicide altogether, not ever allowing themselves the time to deal with the grief that they are feeling. The stigma attached to suicide really does leave a lot of people feeling very isolated and stressed out which can make the grief process all the more difficult, and may leave some at risk for suicide or suicidal ideation themselves.

You’re Not Alone

When you are coping with the loss of someone that you love and you are dealing with the mix of emotions and the compounded grief experienced by those touched by suicide, you should know that you are not alone. Annually there are 10 to 20 million people who attempt to commit suicide, and they are people of all ages, races, and social status. In fact, one in four people know someone who has passed away through this means. Men over the age of 70 are more likely to commit suicide though it is seen in people of all ages from the very young to the very old.

Coping with Your Loss

Are you struggling with the loss of someone who died through the act of suicide? It can be very difficult but you need to remember that you are not alone. Coping with the loss is something that everyone does differently, but there are some things that you can do to help yourself move through the grief process. First and foremost, you need to acknowledge the suicide even though it may be against your religious or cultural belief. Next, you should recognize your feelings and the loss that you have experienced. Be sure to talk openly with your friends and family members about your grief, reaching out to your friends.

Many people find that support groups specifically for those that have been affected by suicide are very helpful. There are groups of this type for every age group, so you’ll be sure to find one where you fit right in. Best Nintendo Wii Games and Where Can You Get Them

June 29, 2008

After a successful succession of the Game Cube system, Nintendo Wii has been available on the market for a few years. With unique features, small size and a level of innovation unheard of in the video game industry, it is making quite a name for itself. There are also some great games that are available for the system as well. Some of the games available include Red Steel, Super Smash Bros, Brawl and of course the ever popular Super Mario Galaxy. If you have Game Cube games, don’t worry, you can play those games on your Nintendo Wii as well.

What are the best games?

Sports Games – One of the most popular sports games is the Wii sports game. This game is actually five games in one. You can play golf, tennis, baseball, bowling and boxing. However, what’s unique about the Nintendo Wii experience is that you can actually simulate the natural sports movements of the games. For instance, if you are boxing you can simulate actual punching movements. If you are playing baseball you can simulate swinging a bat or pitching a baseball.

Franchise Games – The Nintendo company is known for building franchise brands that are unique and exclusive to their systems. Every video game fan is at least aware of the Legend of Zelda franchise. Now Zelda fans can experience Zelda in a new way because of the interactive format of Nintendo Wii games. WarioWare: Smooth Moves is another franchise game that you can enjoy on the Nintendo platform.

Where can you get these games?

Traditionally the only way you can get video games for any game console is to either purchase them from a video game store or to rent them at a movie or video game rental company. Now with Nintendo Wii games a new method of distribution has been created. You can now download Nintendo Wii games over the Internet by connecting your system to Internet access.

Wii Media Downloads site is one of the first web sites available for the purposes of providing Nintendo Wii owners with the ability of accessing Wii media downloads for your system. With this web site you now have the ability to download music, movies and games to your Nintendo Wii entertainment system.

So how does this web site work? Basically you pay a one time fee of $49.95. This is a one time payment that you make to purchase a membership to the web site. Once you are a member, you never have to pay again. This means you can download as much content as you want from the web site for no additional cost.

In order to use the web site for Wii Media Downloads you will need a PC and a high speed Internet connection along with your Nintendo Wii system. Once you sign up and get an account, you will be able to log into the membership area.

The membership area gets you access to file sharing networks where you can download whatever you are looking for. You also get access to a special software application that allows you to convert the files over to the Nintendo Wii.

Other advantages for Wii media downloads membership are 24/7 free support, fastest download speed, huge media selection and a simple usage.

I would say the biggest disadvantage is that this web site has no control over the databases where you will download from. This means you could very easily download copyrighted material. In the United States many copyright owners are tracking this and they have the ability to file a complaint to your internet service provider and even sue you for breaching their copyright. Therefore you need to be careful and make sure you don’t use this type of service to infringe on someone’s copyright. If you suspect a download might be infringing on a copyright, don’t download it.

You can try the web site out if you want as they have a very generous refund policy. As long as you request a refund within 56 days, you will get your money back.
